Second week of the high school volleyball season, and we are beginning to see some patterns take shape. University Heights is not just preseason expectation. The Lady Blazers sent a message to the 2nd Region with a sweep of Henderson County. Caldwell County is still among the region elite, and will be a handful for any team. Despite their loss to UHA, Henderson County is still Henderson County. The big question in the region is whether or not it is just the “Big 3”, or can someone threaten to shake things up a bit. With all of that said, here is a look at this week’s YSE 2nd Region Volleyball Super 7.
– University Heights (5-1) – The Lady Blazers made a big run at the Apollo Summe Slam, making the championship game of the gold bracket, before falling to defending 3rd Region champion Breckinridge County. Outdoor school means no action for the Lady Blazers until the All A Classic on September 4.
– Caldwell County (4-1) – For the second year in a row, the Lady Tigers earned a split on their early season road trip to Louisville. After a win over Christian Fellowship, Caldwell County is off until the All A Classic, and a possible epic championship matchup with University Heights.
– Henderson County (4-3) – Sort of an up and down week for the northern Lady Colonels. They picked up a win over Apollo, but then got swept by UHA and Central Hardin. They did pick up a four set win over Hoptown, and now get ready for a district showdown with Webster County.
– Madisonville (6-3) – The Lady Maroons had a decent showing at the Apollo Summer Slam, going 3-2, and winning the bronze bracket championship. They came out of that with a sweep of Trigg County. Lady Maroons are off until a September 5 trip to Ohio County.
– Crittenden County (3-1) – The Lady Rockets picked up wins over Murray and Hopkins Central, but got blitzed by Madisonville. This could be one of those teams that, with the right draw, could pick up a regional tournament win down the road. Still need to show that they can compete with the Big 3 +1.
– Webster County (4-4) – The Lady Trojans had their struggles at Apollo, going 1-4 in the Summer Slam, pulling out a win against Edmonson County. We will find out much much more about this team come Thursday when they go on the road to Henderson County.
– Hopkinsville (2-3) – The Lady Tigers had a decent trip to the Summer Slam, coming away 2-3 on the weekend, picking up wins over McLean County and Hancock County, and very nearly picking up another win over Tilghman. They battled and rallied against Henderson County, forcing the Lady Colonels to play four sets. Up next is a trip to Daviess County.
