Henderson County held down the top spot in the YSE Boys’ Soccer Super 7 for most of last season until a late surge by Hopkinsville saw them overtake the Colonels and win their third straight region title. Hoptown begins the 2019 season at the top, but Henderson County and Madisonville are close behind.
Hopkinsville (2-2) – The Tigers came out of a tough first week schedule with a 2-2 record. Their four opponents are a combined 8-3. This year’s team takes on a drastically different look. Past Tigers teams would outscore their opponents, while this year’s squad relies more on defense. Once the Tigers get their offense straightened away, they should again be at the top of the region. If they don’t, they may see their three-year run at the top come to an end.
Henderson County (1-1-2) – The Colonels are knocking on the door of the top spot after a strong start to the season. Their only loss came to Oldham County, a top-ten ranked team. They tied with Madisonville but get a slight nod due to a tougher schedule.
Madisonville (2-0-1) – The Maroons are unbeaten with a tie with Madisonville on their slate. They have a showdown with Hopkinsville next week that will help shape the top three moving forward. Their defense has allowed just one goal in three games.
Trigg County (4-0) – The Wildcats are off to a 4-0 start and will have to make do without last year’s leading scorer, Elijah Gaines, who is out for the season with a knee injury. Trigg’s defense has been stout, giving up one goal in four games. Their schedule is bottom-heavy which means they should rack up several more wins before seeing the region heavyweights.
University Heights (2-1) – The Blazers scored 17 goals in their wins over Mayfield and Fort Campbell and just one in their loss to Ohio County. UHA is off until Sept. 3 while the high school attends their annual outdoor school away from the campus. They jump right in with All-A Classic play against Fort Campbell, who they beat 7-1 last week.
Webster County (1-1) – The Trojans don’t have enough to get past Henderson County in the district but look to put together one of their seasons in team history. A 3-0 loss to unbeaten Ohio County shows how far their defense has come after giving up four goals a game last year.
Christian County (1-2) – The Colonels have played three one-goal games for first-year coach Austin Byrum with a win over Franklin-Simpson giving him his first win. Byrum is still trying to slot the right people in the right slots but has found a good defensive combination that has allowed just two goals in each of the first three games.
