Former University of Kentucky basketball All-American Kyle Macy has clarified his comments made to an Indianapolis radio station last week that said he was “unwelcome” around the program.
Macy, who is a regular guest on WHVO Radio’s Hoptown This Morning program, felt too much was being made about his comments on the Query & Schultz show on Fox Sports 1260 last Thursday. He said last week that he didn’t know if he felt welcome at Kentucky basketball practices, but clarified today that he should have chosen different terminology.
Macy’s comments were picked up by Kentucky media outlets, who said they were likely due to philosophical differences with Kentucky Coach John Calipari. Macy said he is not a fan of Kentucky playing neutral site games against higher profile teams and thinks the Wildcats should renew their annual series with Indiana. On Tuesday, he did not back down from those comments.
Macy helped lead Kentucky to the 1978 national championship and was the 1980 SEC Player of the Year. He has stayed around the program in recent years, serving as a radio and TV analyst for UK games and lives in Lexington. He said his feelings about Kentucky have not changed.
In an unrelated note, Kentucky released their 2019-20 nonconference basketball schedule Tuesday. It has neutral site games with Michigan State, Utah, and Ohio State and home games with Georgia Tech and Louisville. Other home opponents include Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Utah Valley, Mount St. Mary’s, Lamar, UAB, Farleigh Dickinson.
