A pair of Trigg County cowgirls have started competition in the National Junior High Finals Rodeo this week in Huron, South Dakota.
Bailey Shaughnessy finished 10th in her first Barrel Racing performance Sunday, completing the course in 17.43 seconds, which was less than a second behind the first place racer.
Shaughnessy is also competing in the pole bending competition this week.
Margaret Rogers finished 17th in her first barrel racing competition with a time of 18.00 seconds.
Barrel Racing has each rider run a cloverleaf pattern with the fastest time winning.
Rogers also took part in goat tying, finishing 16th in her first run Monday morning in 12.28 seconds. She is also competing in the pole bending competition this week.
There is a total of performances in each category that will continue through Saturday. Wednesday’s two heats will put them just over halfway in the competition.
The National Junior High Finals Rodeo is the world’s largest junior high rodeo and features over 1,000 cowboys and cowgirls from 44 states and three foreign countries.
The rodeo continues through Sunday.
