We are heading into the final days of the regular season in high school softball, and one thing is clear. The 2nd Region tournament could be a very interesting affair. At this point, you could make an argument for six teams having a shot to get hot over those three days and playing their way into the state tournament. How the draw comes out for the tournament could play a big role in who takes home the trophy.

Webster County (22-5) – The Lady Trojans have won 11 of their last 13, but their hold on the top spot continues to be by a slim margin. They rebounded from their loss to Madisonville with wins over Owensboro Catholic and Trigg County. They have a big weekend coming up in Bowling Green against top flight competition.

Henderson County (19-5) – The northern Lady Colonels picked up a pair of wins over the past week against teams they were supposed to beat. They have some big ones coming up, including a trip to the Best of the West this weekend in Bowling Green, which will be a chance to find out how tournament ready this team is.

Christian County (21-6) – The southern Lady Colonels are struggling a bit over the past couple of weeks. They have now lost three of their last five, and almost fell to #4 in the rankings this week. A huge 2nd Region showdown comes up Thursday night as they travel to take on the resurgent Lady Maroons from Madisonville. We could find out a great deal about both teams in that one.

Madisonville (15-7) – In mid-April, the Lady Maroons looked to be in trouble. They were 6-7, and just did not seem to be where they could contend for another regional title. Now, they are the hottest team in the region, winning 9 in a row, and Courtney Patterson appears to be back to her old self. Anyone really want to face this team when they are playing like this?

Caldwell County (13-10) – While Madisonville may be the hottest team in the region, the Lady Tigers would be 1-A in that category. They have now won six in a row, and 11 of their last 13. Included in that run are wins over Henderson, Christian, Graves, and Lyon. Looking now much like the team that lost in extra innings in last year’s regional final, and one that will be no fun to play in an elimination setting.

Lyon County (18-10) – The Lady Lyons took one in the grill from Caldwell County this week. They rebounded Tuesday night with a nice win over Calloway County. With their schedule, they have a chance to build a little momentum heading into district tournament play, and will still figure to be a tough out in the postseason.

Trigg County (15-13) – The Lady Wildcats represented well, except for one inning, in a loss to Webster County. Finishing out the season, they will be favored in three of their final four regular season games. Mark down May 16th, when they will take on Caldwell County, which should give us a good gauge of how much of a dark horse this team could be.
