Lyon County wanted to make sure their first trip to the All-A Classic State Baseball Tournament would not be a quick one. The Lyons used a strong pitching performance from freshman Jackson Shoulders to beat Campbellsville 5-2 Saturday in the first round of the tourney in Owensboro.
Shoulders allowed just five hits and allowed two earned runs in picking up the complete game win. He was able to pitch out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning without allowing a run and cruised the rest of the way.
Lyon County tallied single runs in the second and third innings and scored two in the fourth thanks to Campbellsville’s porous defense that committed seven errors in the contest.
Aidan Rush singled to left in the second inning. A bad throw to the infield allowed Lyon to score their first run.
In the third inning, Gabe Board reached on a dropped third strike and came around to score when Brody Williams’ ground ball was misplayed.
In the fourth, Christian O’Daniel singled and scored on another Eagle error. Shoulders helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly to put the Lyons ahead 4-0.
Campbellsville, champions of the Fifth Region who entered the contest with a 20-5 record, got two runs back in the fifth on a pair of hits and a Lyon error.
Yet another Campbellsville error led to Lyon finishing the scoring in the sixth inning. None of Lyon County’s errors were earned. Campbellsville opted to start Arren Hash on the mound, who was 3-1 with a 2.14 ERA. Campbellsville saved three other pitchers with more wins and a lower ERA.
The bottom third of the Lyon County lineup had four of their seven hits. Brady Darnall had two hits, and O’Daniel scored two runs.
Lyon County has won 12 of their last 13 games to improve to 16-6 on the season. They will play defending All-A state champion Beechwood Sunday morning at 8:30.
