A former University Heights basketball coach has decided to step down from his current position at East Ridge High School. Reports Thursday indicate that Randy McCoy announced he would be stepping down as the Warriors head coach.
McCoy left UHA in June 2012, after five seasons as the boys’ basketball coach to take the position at East Ridge. McCoy coached the Blazers to a 91-54 record in five seasons. His tenure included an All A Classic championship, and a 2nd Region championship during the 2007-08 season.
This year, McCoy’s East Ridge team finished 12-16, and lost to Pikeville in the opening round of the 59th District tournament.
In an interview with the Appalachian News-Express, McCoy did not call his departure a “retirement”, which would seem to leave open the possibility of McCoy returning to the sideline at some point.
McCoy started as a team manager at Pikeville College, under Wayne Martin, who then later hired McCoy as an assistant at Morehead State University, where McCoy stayed for nine year. McCoy had his first head coaching job at Elkhorn City, from 1988 until 1999. His coaching record there was 222-96. In 1993, McCoy led Elkhorn City to its first 15th Region title since 1945.
McCoy left Elkhorn City to take over the head coaching duties at Pikeville College. He coached the Bears from 1999-2006, compiling a 140-78 record with the Bears.
After leaving Pikeville College, McCoy took over the head coaching duties at University Heights Academy, where he coached UHA from 2007-2012.
