The Lyon County baseball team put a four-game losing streak behind it with two victories Saturday at the Tribe Classic in Kingsport, TN, knocking-off Dobyns-Bennett, TN 7-2, before holding-off a rally by David Crockett, TN to win 6-4. The Lyons improve to 6-5 overall with a meeting with Crittenden County in the 2nd Region All “A” Classic scheduled for Monday.
Tied at 2-2 in the sixth, Lyon County erupted for 5 runs for the final margin. The Lyons loaded the bases on an error, a walk,and a hit by pitch, before Brody Williams and Jake Kleuppel hit back-to-back RBI singles. Williams and Kleuppel were the only Lyons with multiple hits, with 3 and 2, respectively.
Another run came home on a fielder’s choice, followed by RBI singles from Brady Darnell and Christian O’Daniel to put the Lyons in control.
After 4.2 strong innings from Corey Cissell, Gabe Board came on and got the final seven outs. Cissell yielded 2 earned runs on 5 hits, with a couple of walks and a strikeout. Board allowed no runs on a single hit, with a walk and 2 strikeouts.
Travis Yancy led the way for the Lyons in the second game against David Crockett, going the distance on the mound and finishing 3-3 at the plate with 3 RBI.
The Lyons took the lead in the second on a single by Luke Gilbert that scored Yancy, before tacking on 2 more runs in the third on an RBI single by Yancy and a Kleuppel double that scored two.
Lyon County appeared to put the game away with 3 more in the fourth, with O’Daniel singling to score Gunnar Bingham and Yancy following with a double that brought in Board and Jackson Shoulders.
However, the Pioneers would finally break through against Yancy with a run in the bottom of the fifth and 2 more in the sixth.
Protecting a 2-run advantage, Yancy made things interesting with a couple of one-out walks in the bottom of the seventh, before coaxing a ground-out and sealing the win with a strikeout. Yancy finished with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts, scattering 4 hits.
