Easton McGee was assigned to the Tampa Bay Rays spring training camp Tuesday, and the former Hopkinsville High Mr. Baseball was in uniform for a spring training contest.
Most major league teams do not send their top players on the road on non-split squad days, which gives non-roster invitees and even players such as McGee an opportunity to see some limited playing time before being given their minor league assignment.
McGee pitched for the Class A short season Hudson Valley Renegades in 2018. He put together a record of 7-3 with an ERA of 5.23 with 37 walks and 13 walks in 63 innings.
McGee was selected by the Rays in the fourth round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft. He spent his first two seasons in Rookie League baseball with Gulf Coast and Princeton. He moved up to the short season last year which begins play in June. McGee is hoping to join the Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods as his next step up the Minor League ladder.
