Lyon County will look to win the Boys’ Fifth District basketball title as the top seed for the second time in three years when the tournament begins Monday at Livingston Central High School.
The Lyons (19-9) rolled through the regular season unbeaten in district play and will open play at 6pm against No. 4 seed Trigg County (11-16). The Lyons swept the Wildcats, winning 55-50 in Eddyville and 68-52 in Cadiz.
Lyons’ guard Gabe Board did not play in the first game, a contest Trigg County led by five points entering the fourth quarter. He had 23 points and 12 rebounds in the return trip last month.
Since winning the last of four straight district titles in 2016, Trigg County has dropped two straight first round games to Lyon County.
If the Lyons win the district title, it would be their 19th in school history and break a tie with Livingston Central for second-most in the Fifth District. Trigg County has won the most with 21.
In the 7:30 nightcap Monday, No. 2 seed Livingston Central (15-13) will play No. 3 seed Crittenden County (10-17). The Rockets won a coin flip with Trigg County to move into the 2-3 contest.
The Cardinals swept the Rockets during the regular season, winning 64-53 on Dec. 14 and getting a Cameron Head 3-pointer with seven seconds left to win the Feb. 1 contest 53-52 in Marion.
Livingston Central, who notched a 7-4 record on their home floor this year, is looking for the school’s first district title since 2012. They were the No. 1 seed last year and got upset by the Rockets in the semifinals. Crittenden then went on to win their first district title in 20 years by upsetting Lyon County in the championship.
Monday’s winners will advance to the Fifth District championship Thursday at 6:30 and move into the Second Region Tournament next week at Madisonville.
The Fifth District Tournament can be heard on WKDZ 100.9 FM and online at wkdzradio.com.
