Our next to last edition of the YSE Boys 2nd Region “Super 7” of the season changes very little at the top. The Blazers and the Maroons at this point are the clear front runners in the region, with Hopkinsville lurking just off their shoulders. There are a few others hoping to make a big push as we head into the home stretch of the basetball season.
1. UHA (23-4) – The Blazers rebounded from a tough loss to a very good Briarcrest team by taking down Christian County in an important 8th District battle. A big showdown looms on the horizon Saturday night as UHA could lock up the top seed in the district with a win at home against Hoptown.
2. Madisonville (20-5) – The Maroons have now won 13 in a row, making them the hottest team in the region. This team could be as dangerous as any team around come the postseason. Would not be surprising to see Madisonville finish the season on a 17 game winning streak.
3. Hopkinsville (14-9) – The Tigers have won six of their last seven. This is a team that will be a problem for someone in the postseason. They head into a massive showdown this weekend against UHA with a chance at the top seed in the district tournametn on the line.
4. Christian County (13-14) – Toss the losing record out the window. This team took Hopkinsville down to the wire on their home court. The southern Colonels also gave UHA fits for three quarters on the Blazers home court. Neither of those two would look forward to being in the 2 vs 3 game against Stovall’s team in the opening round.
5. Caldwell County (16-8) – The Tigers have won five of their last six, with the only loss coming to Madisonville. The big problem for the Tigers right now is that they will have to play Hopkins Central in an elimination game in the first round of the district tournament on the Storm’s home floor.
6. Lyon County (17-8) – The Lyons have won 5 of their last 6, and are clear favorites going into the 5th District tournament. That 30 point loss to Caldwell County is still somewhat concerning should the Lyons get out of the district and into the 2nd Region tournament
7. Union County (13-7) – Look out, here come the Braves thundering down the stretch. Union County has won six of their last seven. Their only loss was to Henderson County on the road, and then they turned around and spanked the Colonels by sixteen points. Gaither and company make this team a bit dangerous down the stretch.
