Caldwell County battled back from 12 points down in the first half to post a 79-71 victory at Crittenden County on Tuesday night.

Derrin Boyd had 28 points and John Davis scored 20 for the Tigers to help offset a 29-point night from the Rockets’ Preston Turley and 19 points from Eric O’Leary.

Crittenden, now 8-15, came out hot early, burying five 3-pointers in the first 12 minutes of the contest.

A trey from Hunter Boone put the Rockets up 35-23 midway through the second period.

Crittenden led by 12 again at 37-25 before Caldwell got to within 43-36 at halftime thanks to a putback by Davis just ahead of the horn.

The Tigers took their first lead of the second half on a short jumper in the lane from Jamarius Blaine at the 3:51 mark of the third quarter. That pushed Caldwell in front 50-49.

A Turley bucket from inside enabled Crittenden to regain the advantage momentarily, but Davis scored on a stickback at the other end and drew a foul. He made the free throw to put Caldwell in front for good. That made it 53-51.

Crittenden was still within 60-58 after three quarters thanks to a 3 by O’Leary.

Caldwell went up by six midway through the fourth quarter and led 71-65 following a driving layup by Cayden Fraliex with 2:43 to play.

The Rockets whittled the margin down to 71-69 when Tyler Boone made one of two free throws at the 1:16 mark.

Caldwell put the game away at the charity stripe, though, going a perfect 8-for-8 over the next 1:02 to take its biggest lead of the night at 79-69 with just 14 seconds remaining.

Davis finished 9-for-9 at the free throw line for Caldwell, which won for the second night in a row and for the fifth time in six games.

Blaine added 10 points for the Tigers while Fraliex had eight points.

Caldwell also beat Crittenden on Dec. 4 in Princeton, claiming a 77-57 decision that night.

Caldwell next hosts Trigg County for Homecoming on Friday before a matchup at 2nd Region favorite University Heights Academy next Tuesday.
