For only the fourth time, the Second Region has drawn the 13th Region in the first round of the girls’ Basketball Sweet 16 that will be played in March for the first time at Rupp Arena.
The 2/13 matchup is slotted in the final spot in the lower bracket which means a Thursday game. The KHSAA will determine the start time at a later date.
Webster County is the defending Second Region champion. They lost to Boyd County in the first round of the state tournament last year.
It marks the first time since 2004 that the Second and 13th Regions will meet in the first round. Christian County beat Rockcastle County 57-43 in that 2004 matchup.
Harlan County (15-4) is the defending 13th Region champion. South Laurel (19-5), who last won a region title in 2008, and North Laurel (19-4), who has never won a region title, are also considered contenders in the 13th Region.
