Christmas is behind and 2019 is just around the corner. We nearly had a #1 in the YSE 2nd Region Boys Super 7 this week. It was very, very close. For the moment, the UHA Blazers remain in the top spot, but the Madisonville Maroons have significantly closed the gap. So much so, that it was almost a tie a the top of this week’s rankings.
1. UHA (9-2) – Despite the loss, I still believe that UHA is better than Lexington Christian. The stress of the Hopkinsville and Madisonville games back-to-back may have taken a toll on the Blazers in their KOB opener. Then, Evanston went wild behind the arc, and it was just one of those nights. Let’s see how UHA responds this week in Lexington.
2. Madisonville (7-4) – The Maroons played pretty well at the King of the Bluegrass. Wins over Fairdale and Lexington Christian, and a tough loss to Collins. Fatigue may have finally set in during their loss to Brentwood Academy. Madisonville heads off to tourney play in Bowling Green this week.
3. Hopkinsville (8-3) – The Tigers very nearly won the Owensboro Invitational, losing by one point at the very end of the championship game to John Hardin, who happens to still be unbeaten. This team is starting to look very dangerous in the 2nd Region. The Tigers are in Jefferson City for tournament play this week.
4. Christian County (4-5) – The Colonels record might be deceptive as to how good this team could be as the season goes on. A tough test this week in Poplar Bluff. The New Year starts off brutal with games against McCracken County and Paducah Tilghman on consecutive nights.
5. Caldwell County (7-3) – The Tigers go 2-1 at the Butler County tournament, with the loss coming to a solid Logan County team. Tigers are hosting a holiday event this week. But, mark your calendar for January 8, which is the date of the first of two games between Caldwell and Madisonville.
6. Henderson County (7-3) – The northern Colonels are still hard to get a read on at this point. Early in 2019, we should have a better idea as they play five games against teams in the 2nd Region. Still, Henderson is Henderson, until something shows us otherwise.
7. Lyon County (8-5) – The Lyons rebounded from a pair of tough losses to 1st Region opponents by going to Butler County and picking up a couple of wins. Lyon County is at Stewart County this week for a holiday tourney. This team is already a tough out, but could be an even bigger handful when Gabe Board returns.
