A slow start Thursday afternoon was too much for the Todd County Central Rebels to overcome as they dropped their opening game of the 2018 South Central Bank-Halton Classic, at Allen County-Scottsville. The Rebels fell to 3rd Region foe Daviess County 77-55.
Todd Central’s offense had trouble getting things started Thursday afternoon. The Rebels could muster only six points in the opening quarter and fell behind the Panthers 20-6. Jon Calvery accounted for all of the Rebels’ scoring over the first 8 minutes.
Things were better for the offense in the second quarter, but on the other side the Daviess County offense continued clicking right along. In spite of 6 points from Todd County’s Austin Rager, the Panthers extended their lead over the Rebels to 40-23 at the break.
The Rebels could not make much headway as the second half got underway. For the third straight quarter, Daviess County put 20 points on the board and pulled on out to a 20 point lead at 60-40 as the two teams headed into the final quarter. Calvery scored 9 in the frame for the Rebels.
In the 4th, Todd County Central continued to play fairly even with the Panthers. However, the slow start at the beginning of the game was something the Rebels just could not overcome the rest of the game. Daviess County outscored the Rebels 17-15 over the final eight minutes to reach the final 22 point margin.
Calvery’s 24 led the Rebels, followed by 9 from Austin Rager, and 6 for Deonte Toliver.
The loss drops Todd Central to 4-9, while Daviess County improves to 4-6. Todd Central drops into the consolation bracket of the tournament and will play again Friday afternoon at 12:45.
