Lady Colonels Drop Opener at the Queen of the Commonwealth

A strong start by Christian County faded in the second quarter as the Lady Colonels dropped their opener in the Queen of the Commonwealth to Sacred Heart Academy 71-49 Wednesday.

The Lady Colonels used a 9-2 first quarter run to lead 13-9. Sacred Heart, ranked seventh in the state in this week’s Bluegrasspreps.com rankings, rebounded to take a 32-27 lead at the break.

SHA then used a 17-3 third quarter run to take control of the contest and lead 57-37 heading into the final frame.

Turnovers, which have aided the Lady Colonels in their wins this season, were their undoing against the Valkyries. Christian County committed 20 turnovers that Sacred Heart turned into 18 points. The Lady Colonels scored five points off 14 Sacred Heart miscues. The Valkyries also hit 8-of-19 three-pointers.

Aaliyah Hampton led the Lady Colonels with 21 points. Trinity McGee added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Destinee Marshall led Sacred Heart (5-1) with 20 points.

Christian County (5-4) slips to the consolation bracket where they will play Central (4-3) at 6pm.
