The Hopkinsville girls’ basketball team handed Muhlenberg County its first loss of the season on Saturday, using a strong defensive effort to top the hosts 65-46 at the Lady Mustang Classic. The Lady Tigers came into the game allowing only 45 points a game, and held Muhlenberg County to its lowest-scoring output of the season, almost 20 points below its average.
Yogianah McKnight scored 4 first-quarter points and the Lady Tigers held a slim 12-11 lead. After outscoring the Lady Mustangs 13-11 in the second quarter, Hoptown had a 25-22 advantage at halftime.
Breon Oldham put up 8 points in the third quarter, and the Lady Tigers’ defense clamped down to hold Muhlenberg to only 8 points. Hopkinsville built a 12-point cushion heading into the final 8 minutes.
Oldham kept the hot hand in the fourth, chipping in 9 more points. Elizabeth Joiner scored 6 for the Lady Mustangs and Destin Armour had 4, but Jayla Rose scored 6 and McKnight added 4 to lead the Lady Tigers to a 19-point, statement victory.
Oldham’s 24 led all scorers, Rose finished with 12, and McKnight scored 11. Lakayla Samuel had 9 points and 11 rebounds, and Donisha Flowers scored 9 with 10 boards.
Hoptown is back in action on Monday, going on the road to face the 4-2 Logan County Lady Cougars.
