Inconsistent results, turnover in the lineup and overall turmoil has smothered the start of the 2018-2019 season for the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team. Though they’re at 7-2 on the year, their best win is over UNC Greensboro while suffering a blowout loss to Duke and most recently an overtime heartbreak against Seton Hall.

This week’s disappointing news came in arguably the worst way as Kentucky prepares for a three-game stretch that could greatly affect the outcome of the Wildcats’ season. Sophomore point guard Quade Green, the team’s “veteran” in the backcourt, announced he will transfer out during the season.

Green’s playing time has become next to none at all over recent weeks, as his relationship in the team’s system simply wasn’t working. Going forward, Kentucky will have just two freshman at the point guard position. Ashton Hagans is trending upward but still learning the offense, while Immanuel Quickley has yet to revamp his Bahama-mentality.

On Saturday, Kentucky will return to their home court for a matchup with the Utah Utes. The Utes are 4-4 on the season, losing to BYU, Hawaii, Minnesota and Northwestern. Their wins are short of impressive, coming against the likes of Grand Canyon, Maine, Mississippi Valley State and Tulsa.

While Utah doesn’t come off as a dangerous threat, Kentucky is most likely the second-best team they’ll play this year. The Utes also host Nevada, but playing in Rupp Arena will most likely be their “Super Bowl.” As history tells us, most teams come into Rupp and play their best game of the year. Don’t expect anything less from the Utes on Saturday afternoon.

As for the Wildcats, one bright spot of their early start to the season is their perfect home record. Despite their struggles playing consistent basketball, they should be able to continue that trend.

PJ Washington had his coming out party against Seton Hall, doing it all for the Wildcats. Unfortunately, his career-day was spent in a loss. However, don’t expect that to sway his confidence and motivation on Saturday.

In Kentucky’s backcourt, Quickley and Tyler Herro will have to become more efficient on the offensive end. Hagans is on the court as a primary defender, but could also be useful in the fast break offense and slashing to the hoop.

Saturday will be the first of three intense games for Kentucky. The Wildcats host the Utes just one week before they travel to face North Carolina in Chicago during the CBS Sports Classic. Then, they’ll head to a hostile Louisville environment after the holiday. A win this weekend could provide Kentucky just the momentum they need for the three-week stretch.

Tip-off on Saturday is set for 5 P.M. EDT on EPSN2.
