Frank Johnson says there isn’t a team in the Fourth Region that shoots the ball the way University Heights Academy does. And if there is, the Todd County Central basketball coach doesn’t want the see them.
The veteran Rebel coach tried everything in his arsenal to slow down the Blazers to no avail. In the end, UHA claimed a 110-66 win over the Rebels Monday at Blazer Gym. Several people associated with the Blazers for a long time couldn’t remember a UHA team scoring 110 points in a game.
The Blazers hit 41-of-74 shots for the game (55-percent), including 16-of-29 from behind the arc. Even more impressive was two turnovers by UHA for the game. They didn’t commit a miscue until late in the third quarter.
UHA used a 17-3 first quarter run to break open a close game. They led 28-10 on a Jalen Brown 3-pointer with 2:23 left in the first quarter, but Todd County chipped away with Austin Rager hitting a pair of 3-pointers to bring the Rebels to within 31-23 early in the second quarter.
The Blazers led by as many as 23 points in the second quarter and settled for a 66-44 halftime lead.
Kyky Tandy and KJ Crump each scored six points in the third quarter as the Blazers built their lead to 92-63 by quarter’s end.
Five Blazers scored in double figures, led by Drew McGowan who knocked down 5-of-8 threes and finished with 24 points and seven rebounds.
Kyky Tandy added 23 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. KJ Crump had the hot hand early and finished with 20 points and three assists. Amani McGee (11 points) and Zach Nailor (10 points) was part of a Blazer bench unit that scored 38 points.
Jon Calvery led Todd County Central with 20 points and eight rebounds. Austin Rager hit four of Todd County’s eight 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.
The Rebels shot 51-percent from the field in the first half but couldn’t maintain the game’s pace and ended at 41-percent. They were also outrebounded 40-26 by the Blazers.
University Heights (4-0) now gets a week to prepare for their Eighth District showdown with Hopkinsville Dec. 11 at Tiger Gym.
Todd County Central fell to 0-4 but have played a brutal early season schedule. They will host East Robertson, Tenn. Tuesday.
