Mayfield Looking to Add 13th State Football Title to Trophy Case

Jayden Stinson threw for three touchdowns, and Mayfield was able to run the football effectively in a 38-7 win over Walton-Verona Friday in the Class 2A football semifinals.

The Cardinals (14-0) will play in the state championship game for the 23rd time Saturday at 1pm at Kroger Field in Lexington. Mayfield will play Christian Academy-Louisville (14-0) who beat Somerset 35-12 in the other Class 2A semifinal.

Mayfield is 1-1 all-time against CAL, with both games coming the in the postseason the past two years. CAL beat Mayfield 48-24 in the state semifinals in 2016 with Mayfield returning the favor 21-14 in the semifinals last year.

Mayfield is 134-33 all-time in playoff history. They have won 12 state championships, with their last coming in 2015 which was the last of four straight titles. Mayfield won their first state title in 1977. They have been state runner-up ten times.

CAL is celebrating their 20th year of football. They are coached by former University of Louisville quarterback Stefan LeFors, who is in his eighth season as skipper of the Centurions. He has a 19-6 playoff record including the 2016 Class 2A state championship.
