Mary Joiner shot another 2-under 70 on Sunday in the final round of Kentucky’s Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, finishing tied for 11th to lead WKU Lady Topper Golf.
After carding a 77 in the opening round, the junior Joiner wrapped up the tournament with a pair of 70s for a 217 total.
Kentucky’s Leonie Bettel won the individual crown at 205, while the Wildcats also took the team title with an 858 tally. WKU tied for eighth as a team at 884.
Junior Bailey Tyree also had a top-25 finish for the Lady Toppers, tying for 22nd at 220 (71-78-71). Freshman Lizzie Loy tied for 31st with a career-low 223 (75-74-74), while junior Abigail Smee was one shot back in a tie for 33rd at 224 (73-76-75).
Freshman Caroline Waldrop withdrew in the final round due to injury.
Sophomores Megan Clarke and Caroline Cavin each shot their best round of the tournament Sunday. Clarke shot a 237 total, capped with a 76, while Cavin improved by 19 shots from Saturday with a 1-over 73, finishing out a 245 total.
“Mary and Bailey played great this week,” WKU head coach Adam Gary said. “We struggled to get the fourth and fifth score every round. We had some injuries to overcome, but I’m proud of the way the team persevered all week. Every shot matters when you play against tough competition. It’s a shame four strokes would have gotten us three more head-to-head wins.”
The Lady Toppers return to the course at Louisville’s Cardinal Cup on Oct. 20-21 in Simpsonville, Ky.
