While the top of the girls’ soccer Super 7 rankings remains unchanged, there was significant movement below the top 3. As the regular season winds down, there are still some opportunities for teams to make their case to move up the rankings heading into the postseason.
1. Henderson County (12-1-1) (Maher Ranking 8) – The Lady Colonels didn’t play last week, but have already made it clear they’re the class of the region. They’re riding a 5-game winning streak since their only loss and have tough matches with Calloway County (7-7-1), Greenwood (9-1-3) and Owensboro Catholic (9-3-1) to close the regular season. Henderson have only conceded 10 goals this season and remain undefeated against Kentucky competition.
2. University Heights Academy (8-5) (Maher Ranking 41) – The Lady Blazers only played once over the last week, a 7-2 road loss to a strong Greenwood (9-1-1) team. Two regular-season matches remain, with a meeting with 1-12 Mayfield leading up to a tantalizing battle with Madisonville-North Hopkins (12-2) on Monday. The winner of that match will claim the second spot in the rankings heading into the postseason.
3. Madisonville-North Hopkins (12-2) (Maher Ranking 52) – The Lady Maroons have been 3rd behind UHA all season, but now they get their chance to jump the Lady Blazers. Madisonville eased past Apollo 4-1 in its only match over the last week, but all eyes will be on a Monday match at Givens Field against UHA. The Lady Maroons close their regular season slate with a meeting with Trigg County (4-10-1) in Cadiz on Thursday.
4. Hopkinsville (7-7) (Maher Ranking 96) – The Lady Tigers have gotten hot at the right time, winning 4 of 5 to be well positioned when Hopkins County Central began to show some cracks. They move up from 5th last week after going 1-1 against tough competition at the Colonel Showcase on Saturday. The Lady Tigers fell 3-1 to Warren Central (14-3-1), before winning 6-2 over Logan County (10-6). It won’t get any easier over the last week of the regular season with matches against 13-5 Muhlenberg County and 14-1-1 Graves County. The Lady Eagles have won 11-straight and haven’t lost in over a month.
5. Caldwell County (7-10) (Maher Ranking 90) – The Lady Tigers move up a spot after a resounding 5-1 victory over Hopkins County Central (8-3-1) on Thursday. Not only does the win move them above the Lady Storm in the rankings, but it also cements the 2nd seed in the 7th District tournament. The Lady Tigers will be busy in the final stages of the regular season, traveling to 1-9-1 Crittenden County on Monday, hosting 7-7-1 Calloway County on Tuesday and welcoming Webster County (6-5) to Princeton on Thursday.
6. Hopkins County Central (8-3-1) (Maher Ranking 107) – The Lady Storm drop two spots this week after getting thumped 5-1 by 7th-District rivals Caldwell County on Thursday. They did pick up a 3-2 win over hosts Christian County in the Colonel Showcase on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Hopkinsville and Caldwell in the rankings. Three matches remain in the regular season, with McLean County (2-13) coming to Morton’s Gap on Tuesday, followed by a trip to Owensboro (6-7-1) on Thursday and a home meeting with Crittenden County (1-9-1) on Saturday.
7. Christian County (7-7-1) (Maher Ranking 118) – The Lady Colonels had an opportunity to move up on Saturday against Hopkins County Central, but a late goal left them on the wrong end of a 3-2 score. Lyon County, winners of 6-straight at 8-3, are making a push for inclusion in the rankings, but the Lady Colonels hold them off this week based on an impressive 1-1 draw with Warren Central (14-3-1) in the Colonel Showcase on Saturday. Christian County has 3 matches left before postseason play, hosting Apollo (6-9) on Saturday, before finishing the regular season on the road at Union County (3-6-3) on Monday and Muhlenberg County (13-5) on Tuesday.
