There is one common thread among the top teams in this week’s YSE Boys’ Soccer Super 7 – they are struggling to beat the top teams from other regions. Henderson County had a chance to distance themselves from the top of the region pack but fell to First Region contender Calloway County. Hopkinsville has a recent loss to McCracken County, and Madisonville fell to Daviess County. Will someone pick up a signature win before the postseason begins in a few weeks?
1) Henderson County (8-5-2) – The Colonels followed up their tie with Hopkinsville with a 2-0 win over University Heights. They finish the regular season with a brutal out of region schedule. It began with a 3-2 loss to Calloway County with games upcoming with Daviess County (Sept. 27), Bowling Green (Sept. 29), Marshall County (Oct. 2), and McCracken County (Oct. 4).
2) Hopkinsville (10-5-1) – The Tigers picked up an impressive 5-4 win over Owensboro, a team expected to challenge Daviess County for the Third Region title. Hoptown has a chance at some revenge and a possible move into the top spot next week when they travel to Warren Central to play the Dragons.
3) Madisonville (9-4-3) – The Maroons have won just once since edging Henderson County 1-0 on Sept. 11. In that stretch, they have less than impressive ties with Ohio County and North Hardin. Their Monday showdown with University Heights was pushed back a week because of the weather.
4) University Heights (7-3-1) – The Blazers haven’t played since a 2-0 loss to Henderson County a week ago. The only chance they have at making a move in the YSE Super 7 is to beat Madisonville Monday.
5) Webster County (5-5) – The Trojans have played once in two weeks – an 8-1 loss to Apollo. Webster has beaten the teams they are supposed to and lost to the teams they should have. They only have two games left in the regular season.
6) Trigg County (10-3) – The Wildcats have won seven of nine games and could very well have a nine-game winning streak if not letting a pair of one-goal losses slip away from them. They have a chance to make a statement in the region with upcoming games with UHA, Graves County, and Hopkinsville.
7) Christian County (5-10-1) – The Colonels have won two straight games and have a chance to gain some momentum with a win over a solid Grayson County team Thursday.
