There were two storylines heading into Friday’s district opener featuring Trigg County and Fort Campbell. Would the Wildcats hold a third straight opponent to under 30 yards rushing or would the Falcons find a way to run the football effectively. The former held true as Trigg County registered four sacks and held Fort Campbell to minus-62 rushing yards in a 34-7 win on post Friday.
It marked the second time in three weeks that Trigg County held their opponent’s rushing yards below zero.
Trigg County got off to a fast start when Jakobe Bridges scored on a 53-yard run on their first play from scrimmage to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead just 2:27 into the contest.
Backed up to their own 24-yard line on their next drive, Fort Campbell was forced to punt, but the snap went into the end zone and was fumbled. Trigg County made the tackle and registered a safety for a third straight week and a 9-0 lead with 7:00 left in the opening quarter.
It looked like Trigg County was on their way to another big first quarter, but the Fort Campbell defense clamped down and took away the Wildcat running game. Michael Averhart registered a pair of sacks in the first half as the Wildcats were forced to punt on their next three drives.
Fort Campbell got on the board with 5:32 left in the first half when quarterback Matthew Middleton hooked up with Nathaniel Lake on three pass plays totaling 28 yards.
Middleton shoveled a pass to Lake at the 1-yard line for the lone Falcon touchdown of the night. Middleton finished 12-of-27 for 85 yards with six of the passes for 64 yards hauled in by Lake.
Ahead 9-7, Trigg County struck just before the half when Cam Jordan connected with Bridges on a 38-yard pass with seven seconds left. The Wildcats led 15-7 at the break.
Trigg County was able to get their ground game going in the second half, rushing for 155 yards. Jordan found the end zone three times on rushes of 1, 6, and 3 yards. The Wildcat quarterback finished 7-of-14 passing for 114 yards. He added 77 yards on 24 carries. Bridges had five catches for 77 yards and two catches for 50 yards.
Trigg County outgained Fort Campbell 331-23 in yardage and ran 13 more plays.
The Wildcats snapped a six-game road losing streak at Fort Campbell dating back to a 2006 playoff win and captured their first regular season win at Fryar Stadium since 2001. Fort Campbell still leads the all-time series 30-15.
Fort Campbell enters their bye week with a record of 1-5. They play at Union County Oct. 5 in what is considered a must-win if the Falcons want the make the playoffs.
Trigg County is 4-2 heading into next week’s home game with Paducah Tilghman at Perdue Field.
