The Christian County Lady Colonels almost pulled it off Tuesday night. After the first two sets of their match with Madisonville, the Lady Colonels found themselves down two sets to none, and not playing very well at Colonel Gym. Madisonville took the opening set 25-20, and looked to be on the way to a sweep after taking the second set 25-19.
Then something changed. The Lady Colonels look nothing like the team they were in the first two sets, came storming back to take set three and set four, as they rallied to tie the match at two sets apiece.
The Lady Colonels got across the board great team play in the third set, winning the set 25-15. Leading only 7-6 in the set, the Lady Colonels ripped off 9 of the next ten points to go up 16-7 and seize control. A big part of the run was the serving of Macy Baker.
In the fourth set libero Elizabeth Gibbs, along with Ariyonna Johnson, seemed to take the match over and get the Lady Colonels right back in the thick of things. The serving of Gibbs was a big part of the success in the fourth set. Gibbs had one run where the Lady Colonels scored eight points during her serve, and she had five aces during that stretch. The Lady Colonels led at one point 14-2, and the held on to take the set 25-16.
Meanwhile, the play of Ariana Johnson at the net was solid as always for Christian County. Johnson at one point had a block, a kill, and an ace.
However, the Lady Colonels may have had to extend a little bit too much energy to get back in the match as Madisonville midway through the fifth set seemed to take control, and pulled away for the win.
The two teams were battling tightly in the fifth set then Madisonville got a couple of key points right in the middle of the court and that seemed to throw the momentum of the match for the rest of the way. With the final set tied at 5, Madisonville scored the next 8 points to put the match away. Senior Averi Moody had three kills during the deciding run.
The Lady Colonels will return to action Thursday at Fort Campbell.
