Trigg County tried to pull out another second half comeback Friday, but McLean County had an answer and held off the Wildcats 21-14 in Calhoun.
Like last week against Monroe County, Trigg County fell behind by two touchdowns in the first half. And just like last week, the Wildcats answered to tie the game. However, McLean County had the answer this week as Jacob Miller scored on an 8-yard run with 4:52 left for the eventual winning score.
It was almost a mirror image of last week as Trigg County struggled offensively in the first half. They managed just 51 rushing yards and one passing yard in trailing 14-0 at intermission.
Meanwhile, McLean County utilized their wing-T attack to rush for 149 yards in the first half. Peyton Caraway scored a touchdown in each quarter of the first half. His 5-yard run with 9:44 to go in the first quarter gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead. He added an 8-yard run was 9:47 left in the first half to put McLean County up 14-0.
The Wildcats answered in the second half as Cam Jordan scored an 8-yard run with 4:04 left in the third quarter to bring Trigg to within 14-7. The Wildcats tied the game when Jordan found Jakobe Bridges on a 19-yard corner route with 10:38 left to tie the game.
McLean County then marched down the field with Miller scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 4:52 left.
On the ensuing drive, Trigg County advanced the football to midfield but turned the football over on downs. McLean was able to run out the clock to move to 2-0 for the second time in three years. It was their first win over Trigg County since 1997 and snapped a four-game losing streak to the Wildcats.
The Cougars ran 57 plays and rushed for 266 yards on the night, led by Miller who had 122 yards on 20 carries. Noah Baldwin added 65 yards on the night.
Jordan was 11-of-17 passing for the Wildcats for 113 yards. He was picked off once and ran for 75 yards on 18 carries. Bridges had four catches for 60 yards.
Trigg County drops to 1-1 on the season and were denied their first 2-0 start since 2011. The Wildcats will host Crittenden County in their home opener Friday. The Rockets were idle this week.
