Following Saturday night’s rainout at Colonel Field, the Hoptown Hoppers quickly returned to the road and suffered a 6-5 defeat at the hands of the Dubois County Bombers on Sunday night. After a hot 8-1 start, the Hoppers are now just 1-4 in their last five games.
The Hoppers struck first for the second straight game, as MJ Rookard drove in Cole Cummings to take a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
In the third, Aidan Elias drove in Rookard to take a 2-0 lead. However, Dubois County answered with a run of their own to make it 2-1 to start the fourth.
There was a brief silence until the bottom of the fifth, in which the Bombers scored four to take the lead at 5-2.
It didn’t last long, though, as Hoptown popped off three consecutive runs in the sixth.
Cody Hartness scored on an error, John Keane scored on an Elias RBI-single and Joe DeFina scored on a Malik Blaise single.
Both defenses then locked in until the Hoppers budged first in the bottom of the eighth, giving up a run to the Bombers. They couldn’t answer in the ninth to then lose the decision.
Kendall Marshall (two innings, three hits, three K’s, one run) took the loss.
Colton Easterwood earned the win.
Elias was the most productive bat for the Hoppers, going 2-5 at the plate for two RBI-singles.
Hoptown (9-5) will have an off-day on Monday before hitting the road once again to face the Madisonville Miners (7-8) at Elmer Kelley Stadium.
First pitch is set for 7 P.M.
