Trigg County has never advanced past the region baseball semifinals in school history. Union County has been in the championship game the past two years. The Braves showed why as they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and got a no-hitter from little-used Davis Corbett in a 4-1 win in the region semifinals Wednesday at Christian County High School.
Corbett had thrown just 16 innings entering the game and was 1-2 with a 3.79 ERA. But he took advantage of an aggressive Wildcat offense that made 11 outs on the first or second pitch they saw.
Coy Burns laced a two-out double in the first and scored on a single by Tristan Mannahan. An error in the outfield plated Union’s second run in the second inning.
Trigg County scored in the fourth inning when Hayden Cunningham reached on an error. Andrew Williamson walked, and both runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Tyler Ladd scored Cunningham on a groundout.
Williamson attempted to score in the next at bat on a wild pitch but was called out on a bang-bang play at the plate.
Union answered with a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Caleb Corbett and tacked on a run in the seventh on a groundout.
Corbett walked four and struck out four. The run he allowed was unearned.
Ashton Plymale took the tough loss for Trigg. He allowed three earned runs and six hits. He struck out seven and walked just one.
Trigg County’s season ends with a record of 19-12. Union County (19-20) will play Christian County (19-12) Thursday in the championship game at 6:30 at Colonel Field.
