Trigg County will be bringing the district baseball championship trophy back to the school for the fifth time in six years after handing Crittenden County an 11-1 loss Tuesday in Marion.
The Wildcats used strong pitching and timely hitting to outscore their opponents 15-1 and allow just five hits in two games.
Ashton Plymale allowed three hits in six innings to get his sixth win of the season and lower his ERA to 2.90. The senior lefty struck out eight and walked just one Rocket batter.
The Wildcats got single tallies in the first and second innings to grab a 2-1 lead. Darrin Brown’s RBI groundout plated their first run, and Nick Ahart’s RBI groundout in the second scored Trigg’s second run.
Trigg took control with a six-run third inning that came off four different Rocket pitchers. Riley Stallons led off the inning with a single, and Savion Radford and Darrin Brown followed with consecutive RBI doubles for a 4-1 lead.
Courtesy runner Andrew Williamson scored on a wild pitch and three straight bases loaded walks built the Trigg lead to 8-1.
In the sixth inning, Radford walked, stole second and scored on a Rocket error. Two batters later, Tyler Ladd doubled to the gap in right and plated two runners that ended the game via the mercy rule.
Six different Wildcats had hits, while Rocket pitchers issued 10 walks. Ladd, Radford, Darrin Brown, and Micah Brown each had doubles for the Wildcats.
Trigg County (18-11) has won five of seven games and will next play Monday in the Second Region Tournament at Christian County High School. Their opponent and game time will be determined Friday.
