Lady Wildcats Closing In on Top District Softball Seed

Trigg County is one win away from securing the top seed in the Fifth District Softball Tournament for the first time in program history. The Lady Wildcat rallied to beat Crittenden County 8-7 in nine innings Thursday in Marion, forcing a season split the with Lady Rockets.

The Lady Wildcats are 4-1 in district play, which also includes a season sweep over Lyon County. Crittenden County is 3-2 in the district. Both teams have one game remaining with Livingston Central.

Things got off to a fast start for both teams. Trigg County scored three runs in the first inning when Autumn Durham had an RBI single followed by a two-run double by Adri Phillips for a 3-0 lead.

Crittenden County answered with five runs in the home half, helped by two hits and three Trigg County errors.

Crittenden added another run in the fourth inning for a 6-3 lead that would stand up until the seventh inning.

Trigg County began their rally when Logan Darnall, back in the lineup after missing two weeks with an ankle injury, singled to center. Hannah Colbert tripled in Darnall and scored on a Madison Simpson double to cut the Crittenden lead to 6-5. Durham reached on a Crittenden error, and Phillips smacked Trigg’s second triple of the inning to take a 7-6 lead.

Crittenden County tied the game at 7-7 on a single and Trigg error.

Trigg County scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning when Durham doubled and scored on a single by Ashlyn Keller. Crittenden County got a runner to third in their half of the ninth, but she was thrown out at the plate by Durham on a one-out grounder.

Durham and Colbert led the 14-hit Trigg attack with three hits each, while Phillips had a double, triple, and four RBIs. Darnall and Simpson both had two hits and two RBIs.

Ashlyn Hicks and Mattia Long each had two hits for Crittenden County (17-7).

Trigg County improves to 18-10 and set a new record for wins in a season for their fast pitch program that began in 1995. The Lady Wildcats host Muhlenberg County Friday.
