The question entering the Second Region Girls Tennis Tournament wasn’t whether Belle Englebright would repeat as champion. The question was would she lose a game. After winning all 15 of her regular season matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores, she finally dropped a gme to Hopkinsville’s Riley Fort in the semifinals Tuesday.
It turned out to be the only game the sophomore dropped on her way to a second straight region crown Wednesday in Henderson. Englebright defeated teammate Maddie Morgan 6-0, 6-0 for her 17th blanking of the season.
Morgan’s loss doesn’t diminish what the sophomore accomplished during the tournament this week. She advanced all to the way to the finals from the first round. She upset the No. 2 seed in the second round and won her semifinal match 6-0, 6-0.
Morgan also won the region’s Sportsmanship Award as voted on by the coaches.
In addition to Englebright and Morgan, Hopkinsville’s Riley Fort and Madisonville’s Madison Cummings will advance to the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament May 17-19 in Lexington.
