The Lyon County softball team had mixed fortunes at the Marshall County Slugfest on Friday, knocking-off Paducah Tilghman 3-1 in the opener and falling 15-1 to Goreville in the nightcap. The Lady Lyons have struggled to score over their last four games, only managing 6 total runs on their way to a 4-7 overall record.
A first-inning error allowed the Lady Lyons to take a 1-0 lead in the opening frame, but Tilghman tied things up in the third when Lyon senior Sophie Bingham was called for an illegal pitch to allow a runner to scored from third base.
Lyon County responded with a run in the top of the fourth when freshman Kyra Craft singled to score freshman Kaelyn Conger. That would be all Bingham needed, as she shut down the Blue Tornado the rest of the way. Conger reached on an error in the top of the seventh to bring home freshman Sydney Melton for the final run.
Bingham went the distance, allowing 1 unearned run on three hits with eleven strikeouts and a walk. Craft had two hits and an RBI, Melton went 3-4, freshman Calista Collins was 2-4, and Conger and freshman Rachel Coursey both had a hit.
Senior Mallory Myers took the loss for the Blue Tornado, going 6.0 innings and giving up 2 runs, 1 earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Lyon County struggled to generate offense in the second game, scoring its lone run in the bottom of the fourth on a home run by Collins. At that point the Lady Lyons trailed 7-1, and Goreville would continue to pour it on over the final two innings to win 15-1.
Melton, Conger, and 8th grader Jaiden Capello each had a hit, with Collins posting a hit and an RBI. Conger took the loss, going 6.0 innings and surrendering 15 runs, 11 earned, on seventeen hits with six strikeouts and five walks.
Lyon is scheduled to return to Marshall County on Saturday to face Murray (5-8) and Daviess County (5-2).
