Webster County will play the first game of the Girls’ Second Region Basketball Tournament on their home floor when the event begins Monday. The Lady Trojans (25-6) will play Dawson Springs (12-19) at 6pm. Webster County has advanced to the region title game each of the last three seasons where they have lost to Henderson County each time. Webster beat Henderson County 51-42 to win the Sixth District title Thursday.
Dawson Springs is the penultimate underdog in the tournament. The Lady Panthers knocked off the top seed Hopkins County Central Lady Storm in the first round of the Seventh District Tournament to advance to the region tournament for the first time since 2006. Dawson Springs has never won a region tourney game in four previous trips.
The teams did not meet during the regular season.
At 7:30 Monday, Fifth District champion Crittenden County (15-13) will play Eighth District runner-up Hopkinsville (19-10). Hopkinsville, the 2012 region champs, advanced to the semifinals last year where they lost to Henderson County.
Crittenden County has not won a game in the region tourney since winning the title in 2011.
The teams did not meet during the regular season, but Hoptown beat the Lady Rockets 68-57 last year.
The only time the schools have met in the region tournament was 1984 when Crittenden Coach Joe McCord beat Hopkinsville, coached by his brother Bob “Foxy” McCord 41-40 in the first round.
Tuesday at 6pm, Christian County (21-7) will meet Fifth District runner-up Livingston Central (14-15).
The Lady Colonels cruised to their first district title since 2010 Thursday.
Christian County beat Livingston Central 75-32 the last time they met in the region tournament in 2003. Livingston’s two tourney wins over the Lady Colonels came in 1985 and 1986 when the Lady Cardinals won back-to-back region titles.
Christian County snapped a five-game region tourney losing streak last year with a first-round win over Hopkins County Central.
Tuesday at 7:30, Seventh District champion Caldwell County (16-12) will meet Sixth District runner-up Henderson County (13-12).
The Lady Colonels are the five-time defending region champions despite losing to Webster County in the district title game.
Caldwell County is making their first trip to the region tournament since 2014 when they beat Lyon County in the first round before losing to Henderson in the second round.
Caldwell has dropped seven straight region tourney games to Henderson County dating back to 1992 when the Lady Tigers beat Henderson 65-59 in overtime of the championship game and advance to the Sweet 16.
