The KHSAA has released its proposed football district alignments for the 2019 season, and there are some significant changes for some of the area teams, some that could make district play much more difficult. The proposal is not final at this point, but will lead to some interesting discussion for the time being.

One of the biggest changes affects the Christian County Colonels. The Colonels will move into District 2 in Class 5A. The move places the Colonels in a district with three Warren County schools. The Colonels would play in a district with Bowling Green, South Warren, and Greenwood. With a four team district, each team would make the playoffs.

In Class 4A, the Hopkinsville Tigers and the Logan County Cougars would be placed in District One along with Calloway County, Hopkins Central, and Madisonville. One team would miss out on the playoffs each season.

In Class 3A, the Trigg County Wildcats end up in District One with Paducah Tilghman, Webster County, and Union County. The four team alignment means every team in the district would qualify for a playoff berth. One other big impact for teams in this district is that the three time defending region champion Elizabethtown would move out of the 1st Region into District Three.

District One in Class 2A sees some significant changes. Both Caldwell County and Fort Campbell would be placed in the district, along with Ballard Memorial, Mayfield, and Murray. With a five team alignment, one team would be left out of the playoffs each season. The alignment has little affect on District Two, which would have Todd County Central, Owensboro Catholic, McLean County, Butler County, and Hancock County.

One western Kentucky team has elected not to compete in a district under the new alignment. Fulton City has opted out of district play, leaving District One in Class A with Caverna, Russellville, Crittenden County, and Fulton County.

The proposed alignment would be for the 2019-2022 seasons. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control is scheduled to finalize the alignment in May after receiving feedback from member schools.
