The coaches and players at St. Mary will be more than happy not to see Gabe Board any more this season. For the second time this year against the Vikings, Board hit a three point buzzer beater, this time to give the Lyons a 49-47 win in overtime at St. Mary. Back on February 3rd at Lyon County, Board hit a 60-foot shot to send the game into a second overtime. The Vikings would go on to win the game in triple overtime. This time, however, Board’s shot ended the game.
The two teams played a defensive battle from the opening tip Tuesday night. The Vikings took an 11-8 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The St. Mary defense limited the Lyons to only 3 field goals in the quarter, two of those coming from behind the arc.
Board heated up in the 2nd quarter for the Lyons, scoring nine points in the quarter. The Lyons’ defense held the Vikings to only nine points, and Lyon County went to the break holding a 23-20 lead.
The Lyons looked to be opening things up a little bit in the 3rd quarter. Lyon County outscored St. Mary 16-13 to push the lead out to 39-33 heading into the final quarter. Board had another big quarter for the Lyons with 6 points.
However, the Vikings were by no means finished. St. Mary limited Lyon County to one field goal and just five points in the 4th quarter, and came back to tie the game up at 44-44 after regulation. Setting up Board’s heroics in the overtime period to give Lyon County the win.
Board had a big night all the way around, coming up with 27 points in the game. Travis Yancy added 8 points. For the Vikings, Hale Sims had another solid game against the Lyons, scoring 16 points.
Lyon County improves to 7-16 and will wrap up the regular season on the road Thursday at Hopkins Central.
