In a preview of a 7th District semifinal matchup, the Caldwell County Tigers went on the road and picked up an overtime win against Hopkins Central Thursday night in Mortons Gap. With four Tigers scoring in double figures, Caldwell County came away with the 83-80 win.
Behind a great start from Jameer Riley and Derrin Boyd, Caldwell County led 21-14 at the end of the first quarter. Boyd had 8 points and Riley added 7 during the opening period. With Blasin Moore heating up during the second quarter, the Storm was able to trim the lead by one to 38-32 as the teams headed off to the locker rooms at the break.
Hopkins Central came out in the second half and began to work again at chipping away at the Tigers six point lead. By the end of the 3rd quarter, the Storm had cut the lead in half, down to 53-50. Keyairreon Hobgood had 8 points in the quarter to pace the Storm attach.
As the 4th quarter got underway, the two teams began a battle that would go down to the end and not be resolved by the end of the quarter. Derrin Boyd almost single-handedly kept the Tigers in the game as the Storm continued their rally. Boyd had 13 points in the final quarter for Caldwell County.
In the extra period, the Tiger defense limited Hopkins Central to just one field goal, as the Tigers were able to inch out and secure the three point win.
Derrin Boyd came up big for Caldwell County, with 37 points in the contest. Jameer Riley added 15, while Cayden Fraliex had 12, and John Davis 11. For Hopkins Central, Blasin Moore had 24, while Key Hobgood added 23.
The win improves Caldwell County to 11-12, while Hopkins Central falls to 13-10. The two teams will meet one more time this season in the semifinal round of the 7th District tournament.
