With less than two weeks to go before the start of the postseason, Christian County, Webster County, and Henderson County have separated themselves as favorites from the rest of the region pack. Here are this week’s YourSportsEdge.com’s Second Region girls’ basketball rankings.
Christian County (19-4) – The Lady Colonels have won a season-high nine straight games, but will see that streak put to the test with games left against First Region favorite Murray and the two Second Region teams on their heels – Webster County and Henderson County.
Webster County (19-6) – The Lady Trojans have struggled with up-tempo teams this year and only have one left on their schedule – a Tuesday matchup with No. 1 Christian County.
Henderson County (11-8) – Henderson County has won five of six games, with a head-scratching loss to Muhlenberg County the only blemish in that streak. The Lady Colonels may be playing the best basketball of anyone in the region right now, giving up just 37 points a game over their last six.
Hopkinsville (15-8) – The Lady Tigers have dropped four of their last five games, including a pair to top-ranked Christian County. However, they did beat a Muhlenberg County team that knocked off No. 2 Henderson County. Go figure.
Lyon County (17-6) – It hasn’t been pretty, but Lyon County has won five straight games since their first round exit at the All-A Classic State Tournament. A Tuesday road game at No. 4 Hopkinsville will be their toughest remaining game.
Hopkins County Central (12-13) – The Lady Storm make a slight jump in this week’s rankings thanks to a win over Caldwell County. However, a few wins and losses here and there could see them drop again next week.
Livingston Central (13-12) – The Lady Cardinals have only beaten two teams with a winning record – Ballard Memorial and Lyon County twice. They face a tough end to the regular season with games against No. 2 Webster County and No. 9 Caldwell County.
Madisonville (6-14) – The Lady Maroons are starting to play good basketball down the stretch with a win over No. 9 Caldwell County and close loss to No. 5 Lyon County.
Caldwell County (11-10) – The Lady Tigers have struggled to score in their last five games, failing to reach 50 points in each game. They will need to overcome the loss to top outside threat Peyton Young (injury).
Union County (7-16) – The young Bravettes could be considered the Fifth District champions if they beat No. 5 Lyon County Friday. However, they play in the Sixth District with No. 2 Webster County and No. 3 Henderson County.
Crittenden County (10-12) – The Lady Rockets have dropped five of six with their only win a Jan 27 victory over No. 9 Caldwell County.
University Heights (8-14) – The Lady Blazers have dropped five straight games since winning their All-A region opener. They play at No. 4 Hopkinsville Thursday.
Trigg County (7-14) – The Lady Wildcats have not scored 50 points since a Dec. 16 win over winless Fort Campbell. They have also only allowed 50 points three times during that stretch.
Dawson Springs (7-16) – The Lady Panthers have only beaten Fort Campbell in the region although they have played some close. They have six games left to play over the final week-and-a-half.
Fort Campbell (0-19) – The Lady Falcons have five chances left to pick up their first win of the season.
