An area high school volleyball coach has been selected to lead the state high school coaches’ association. It was announced Thursday morning that the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association Board of Directors has unanimously selected Daniel Cortner, head coach at Caldwell County High School, to become acting KVCA President effective immediately.

Cortner replaces KVCA founder Mitzi Donhoff. Donhoff will remain on the KVCA Board of Directors and continue to assist with the annual KVCA All-State selections.

As President, Cortner becomes the chief executive officer of the Association. Duties include control over business functions of the Association, preside over all Association meetings and events, administer and present the annual KVCA All-State Awards, and represent KVCA member coaches to the KHSAA and other organizations.

Cortner is a graduate of Caldwell County High School, and began his coaching career as coach of the freshman team at Caldwell County High School in 2009. He assumed coaching duties of the JV team in 2011 and took over as varsity coach in 2015.

His three varsity teams have compiled a record of 81-32 including three district championships and two 2nd Region final appearances. They have also captured the 2nd Region All A all three years reaching the quarterfinals of the state tournament in 2016. Cortner was named the 2016 2nd Region KVCA Coach of the Year and coached the 2nd Region Player of the Year in both 2016 and 2017.

In his desire to promote and improve volleyball in western Kentucky, Cortner helped establish, and serves on the board, of Volleyball Academy of the Pennyrile Region. In their seven years of existence, VAPR has attracted players from two states and fifteen area high schools. He is currently head coach of the 16U team.
