It was a bad day for the Lyon County Lady Lyons to lose their shooting eye at McBrayer Arena. The Lady Lyons shot under 25-percent each half as they fell to Williamsburg 46-32 in the opening round of the Girls All A Classic in Richmond. Lyon County tried to battle through with defense and rebounding, but could just not get shots to fall at key moments when they were trying to get back in the game.

Both teams opened looking a little tight. Two and a half minutes into the game, the two teams had combined for only three points, as Willamsburg led 2-1. Over the rest of the quarter, the Lady Jackets outscored Lyon County 9-2 to take an 11-3 lead after the first quarter. Lyon County’s Hannah Holloman scored all of her team’s points in the quarter.

In the second quarter, Williamsburg opened by pushing the lead to double digits at 13-3. A short rally by Lyon County on baskets by Calista Collins and Hannah Holloman cut the lead to six points. But the Lady Jackets battled back to extend the lead to double digits again, before settling for a 19-11 lead at the half.

Lyon County shot only 21.1-percent in the first half. Williamsburg did not exactly burn the nets off, but did manage to connect on 32-percent in the half.

The Lady Lyons made their most serious run at the lead in the opening moments of the second half. Behind the play of Calista Collins, Hannah Holloman, and Sophie Bingham, Lyon County outscored Williamsburg 7-0 to open the half, and cut the lead to one at 19-18. Again, Williamsburg had the response, ripping off 12 in a row, including back to back three pointers to extend the lead to 31-18. Sophie Bingham hit for 5 quick points late in the quarter to trim the lead to 31-23 entering the final quarter.

One more time, the Lady Lyons tried to get back in the game, with Hannah Holloman scoring at the beginning of the quarter to cut the lead to 31-25. By the time the Lady Lyons were able to manage their next field goal, the lead was 43-28 and their hopes of advancing were gone.

Lyon County was led by Hannah Holloman with 12 points. Sophie Bingham added 7, and Allison Murphy had 6. Williamsburg did a brutally efffective job of clamping down on Murphy, forcing her into 1 of 17 shooting. For the game, the Lady Lyons connected on only 24.2 percent from the field.

Williamsburg was led by Lillie Hall with 19 points. Kelsey Tye added 8 points for the Lady Jackets.

The loss drops Lyon County to 12-6, and they will return to action Friday night when they host Dawson Springs.
