Offensive struggles were the undoing for the Trigg County Wildcats as they fell Friday 52-37 to Creek Wood in the Stewart County Christmas Classic. The Red Hawks employed a 2-3 zone for much of the game Friday afternoon, limiting the productivity of DeOvion Day and Kendric Adams, who had combined for 54 points in Trigg County’s win over Cheatham County on Thursday. The defensive effort for Creek Wood limited the pair to a total of ten points Friday.
The two teams went back and forth early. The game was tied at 7-7, when Creek Wood finished the quarter on a 9-3 run to take a 16-10 lead.
The Red Hawks scored the first five points of the second quarter to extend the lead to 21-10. The Wildcats then had a 6-0 run of their own to trim the lead to 21-16. However, cold shooting and ball handling mistakes hurt Trigg County going into the half, as Creek Wood finished the half 8-0 to push the lead back out to 29-16 at the break.
Like they did the day before, Trigg County tried to crank up the pressure at the beginning of the second half, but this day Creek Wood was better at handling the increased defensive effort. The Wildcats tried to rally, but could get no closer than 12 points in the third quarter. Creek Wood took a 45-29 lead into the final quarter.
Neither team could get much done offensively in the final quarter. Trigg did get the lead down to 11 points at one time. The Red Hawks outscored the Wildcats 7-3 over the final minutes to seal the win.
Trigg County was led by Delo Triplet with 11 points. KiRome Bingham added 9. Creek Wood was led by Clay Ruf with 18.
Trigg County falls to 6-5 and will return to action Tuesday on the road at Community Christian
