University Heights Academy coach Grant Shouse was worried how his Blazer squad would react coming off their first win over Hopkinsville in six years Tuesday. UHA overcame a few defensive lapses and a flurry of 3-pointers to beat West Creek, TN 79-69 Friday in the first game of the Toyota of Hopkinsville Classic at Lyle Dunbar Gymnasium.
UHA grabbed the leady midway through the first quarter and held on to it until early in the fourth quarter. Kyky Tandy scored 10 points for the Blazers in the first quarter as UHA built a 21-16 lead.
Up 40-39 at halftime, the Blazers scored the first six points of the third frame, but the Coyotes got hot, especially junior Jaylen Negron who scored a team-high 27 points.
The Blazers got 38 points from Tandy, who added five rebounds. Drew McGowan had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Quan Hollowell battled foul trouble to score nine points. Heekwun Dorsey added eight points and four rebounds.
West Creek fell to 3-8 with the loss, while the Blazers improved to 3-1. UHA will host Hopkins County Central Saturday night at 8pm in the final night of the Toyota of Hopkinsville Classic at Blazer Gym.
