Avery O’Hara took a trip to Louisville to visit a campus with the prospect of playing college soccer. She left with an offer, but not from the college she intended on visiting first. The Hopkinsville senior signed her letter Wednesday to play soccer at Spalding University.
O’Hara said she visited the University of Louisville campus recently but didn’t like it. She went across town to Spalding University, a school with nearly 20,000 fewer students, and liked it immediately.
O’Hara was part of a Hopkinsville Lady Tiger soccer program that won 43 games in four seasons and two district titles. As a freshman, she was the team’s second-leading scorer and she finished with 57 career goals for the Lady Tigers while playing a variety of different positions.
She feels her athletic ability will help her find a position to play for Spaulding. She finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles at the Class 3A state meet last year. However, she indicated she may not compete on the track team in the spring.
Spalding is an NCAA Division III school, with their women’s soccer team finishing 8-8 last year.
