Christian County finished second at the Harpeth (TN) Invitational Saturday with four wrestlers taking first place.
Gage Fowler (106), Austin Gibson (113), Ethan Wells (120), and Neal Aldridge (145) all took first place in their respective weight classes.
Jakerion Merritt took second in the 132-pound class and recorded the team’s fastest pin of the day – 20 seconds.
Ishmael Griffie (138) and Cameron Coleman (160) both took third place.
“I think this was a great way to start the season,” Coach Robert Burnham said. “Our guys started the day with a bang, with six of our wrestlers pinning their opponents in their first match of the day. Of the nine wrestlers who competed today, eight pinned an opponent. That goes a long way in terms of scoring team points. We give our wrestlers a safety pin for every opponent the defeat by way of pin fall and it’s definitely breeding competition amongst the wrestlers.”
Christian County scored 147 points, just three behind first place Forrest (TN). Harpeth finished third with 119 points, and Fairview (TN) was fourth with 115.5.
“We were without one-third of our line-up for various reasons, but the wrestlers we had, didn’t let that phase them. They just went out, competed and tried their best to make up those points,” Burnham said.
Christian County will wrestle in the King of the Bluegrass at Fairdale High Saturday, an event they have won each of the last three years.
