The Madisonville defense was able to shut down Caldwell County Thursday night as the Maroons won their 6th straight 7th District soccer championship, defeating the Tigers 3-0 at Hopkins Central. The two teams battled to a scoreless draw until late in the first half when the Maroons scored on the reboun of a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead.
Madisonville turned up the pressure during the early part of the second half, spending time on the attack and playing much of the time on the Tigers’ end of the pitch. The pressured paid off when Jeshua DeLeon scored in the 50th minute to extend Madisonville’s lead to 2-0.
The Maroons clinched the district title when Luke McElroy found the net with five minutes left in the match to push the margin to 3-0.
Caldwell County falls to 9-9-1 on the season and will move on to the 2nd Region tournament at the Stadium of Champions. The Tigers will open play against either Hopkinsville, Henderson County, or Lyon County in the first round.
