The Lyon County boys’ soccer team ended a seven-year district championship drought, winning 4-3 over the Trigg County Wildcats in Eddyville. The Lyons move to 9-8-1 with the win, while Trigg County, in the midst of an eight-game losing streak, falls to 6-14.
The Wildcats took the first half lead on a goal by sophomore forward Elijah Gaines, and had a chance to double the lead, but senior Javier Llarena’s penalty kick was saved by Lyon senior goalkeeper Jack Walker. The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead into the half.
The Wildcats started quickly in the second half when Gaines was on the spot to punch in a free kick that Walker spilled in front of the net. However, the two-goal lead was short-lived, as the Lyons cut the lead in half on an own goal. Junior midfielder Trace Adams took a long free kick that appeared to be going wide before it struck sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Smith’s arm and went in. A short time later the Lyons tied the match when junior Travis Crayne got on the end of a corner kick and scored into the far corner.
Trigg County would pull ahead again off a converted penalty kick by freshman midfielder Will Jolly, but Adams took over for the Lyons from there. Adams scored on a free kick and on a solo effort when he dribbled through the Wildcat defense and finished from close range.
Both Lyon County and Trigg County will advance to the Second Region Tournament next week in Hopkinsville. They will find out who they play at Saturday’s draw.
