Logan County led only once in the game and when it mattered the most – the end. Tyler Ezell’s four-yard run as time expired lifted Logan County to a 13-12 win over Hopkinsville Thursday night at Cougar Stadium. The play was set up by a roughing the passer penalty with three seconds left that gave Logan County the football at the Tiger 4-yard line.
Hopkinsville missed on three early chances to score touchdowns, driving inside the Logan 15-yard line each time. However, they settled for a field goal by Taylor Harton each time. His first two were from 28 and 32 yards. He added a 31-yard field goal with 1:03 left to give the Tigers a 9-0 halftime lead.
Logan County opened the second half with a one-yard run by Gary Hardy to pull to within 9-7. Hardy, who averaged 130 rushing yards per game coming in to Friday, was held to 61 yards on 25 carries. For the game, the Hoptown defense continually came up big, holding the Cougars to 148 yards of total offense.
Harton nailed a career-best 39-yard field goal on the first play of the second half for a 12-7 Tiger lead. However, the Cougars were able to drive down the field and score the winning touchdown and win their first game over Hopkinsville in four career meetings.
Hoptown had just 103 total yards in the game. Quarterback Jay Bland was 1-of-15 passing for 16 yards. Jevon Leavell led the Tigers with 57 rushing yards, while Mitchell Degenhardt added 36 yards.
Logan County improved to 7-0 with the win, while Hopkinsville dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the district. The Tigers will likely have a first round playoff game on the road.
Hoptown will host Calloway County next Friday.
