A slow start didn’t deter Cullan Brown from showing he was the favorite to repeat as KHSAA State Golf Champion. His only birdie came on the first hole. The Lyon County senior then responded with six birdies to shoot 5-under and claim the outright lead after the first round of the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA State Golf Championships at the Bowling Green Country Club.
Brown, who began play on the back-nine, birdied three of four holes to make the turn at two-under to make a run at the lead. He birdied both par-5 holes and drained a long putt on the par-3 seventh hole to take sole possession of the lead.
Brown, who finished runner-up two years ago as a sophomore and won it as a junior last year, has a one shot lead over Franklin County’s Will Harnice and a two shot lead over Campbell Kremer of St. Xavier and Jackson LaLonde of Lexington Christian.
The second and final round will be played Wednesday.
