Hoptown Grad Knight Places 3rd at MSU Invitational

The Murray State men’s golf team took the title of their home fall event when they won MSU Invitational Tuesday at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray. With scores of 279-286-285=850, the Racers won their 10th championship of their home tournament in the 14 years it has been held. MSU’s first win since 2015, was a six-shot victory over runner-up UT Martin who had scores of 287-281-288=856.

Murray State’s Avery Edwards was the Racers’ top finisher with a spot in second place with scores of 68-67-72=207 and four shots from medalist, Hunter Richardson of UTM at 203. Other MSU scores included a third place showing by Hopkinsville High School grad Austin Knight with rounds of 67-72-71=210 and Lance Davis in 22nd place on scores of 75-73-69=217. Gabe Wheeler had a 30th place finish on rounds of 72-74-73=219, while Justin Wendling placed 40th on scores of 72-74-76=222.

The Racers had four players in the field as individuals including Connor Coombs who placed 51st on scores of 76-74-75=225. Quinn Eaton placed 57th with scores of 75-74-77=226, while Cole Manion was 62nd after scores of 80-72-76=228. Rhett Cardwell had scores of 76-83-74=233 for a spot in 76th place.

After the Racers and Skyhawks, the rest of the top-5 teams included Western Illinois (859), Morehead State (859) and Austin Peay (860). Tennessee State (865) placed sixth and Tennessee Tech (868) was seventh.

The Racers’ next challenge is the Eastern Kentucky Classic (Sept. 16-17) at the EKU University Club in Richmond.
